John & Sarah (Lanning) Powell were m. on 31 Oct. 1861 in Perry Co., OH. They moved their family from OH to IA sometime between 1880-1889. John's sister Mary Eleanor (Powell) Lanning wrote in an undated letter to her son Joseph Lanning: "Johne Powell is going to move to Iowa New Years day. Ana and Jake Wolf lives out there. They have rented the place." John worked for the post office in Shawnee, Perry Co., OH and in OH was a Free Mason. John d. of TB. John & Sarah were parents of fourteen children, one of whom was b. and d. on 13 Oct. 1885 and is buried in Hocking Co., OH, in an area near Perry Co., OH. The other children were: Anna V., John Thomas Jr., Ellen, Stephen A., Pearl, James Wilmer, Harley, Hester Belle, Mary Catharine, Frank, Louisa, Caleb "Cale," Amy, and Martin "Mark."
