William enlisted 2 Dec. 1861, then was discharged 2 June 1862 as a Private in Co. C, 62nd Reg. OVI. He was a coal miner and m. Mary Frazier on 4 May 1867 in Hocking Co., OH According to the 1880 Hocking Co. census, Mary had a heart condition. They had three sons: Caleb Butler Powell; Moses Powell; and James Powell, as well as two daughters: Quincy and Maude. William d. in Hocking Co., OH of typhoid fever.
