John R. Bird, 69,of Ypsilanti, Mich., passed away Dec. 24, 2007, following an extended illness.

He was born May 25, 1938, in Belle and was a son of the late Alfre N. and Ora H. Truman Bird.

He was a 1957 graduate of Dupont High School and served honorably in the U.S. Army.

On July 16, 1960, he married Rosa Gibson of Strange Creek. She survives.

John was employed by the Ford Motor Company Rawsonville Plant for 37 years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church, Phoenix Lodge 13 AF&AM and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 119, Ypsilanti. He enjoyed his family, fishing, hunting, bowling, golfing and Jeopardy.

In addition to his loving wife of 47 years, survivors include two daughters, Laura (Michael) Clark of Chelsea, Mich., and Beth (Jeff) Bracey of Ypsilanti; six grandchildren, John, Jennifer Clark, Anthony Bird and Alison, Marissa and Adam Bracey; eight sisters, Virginia E. Abbott, Donna (Bob) Osborne, Betty (Kermit) Rogers, Vera (John) Williams, Shirley Braley and Sharon Hannigan, all of West Virginia, Verna (Harold) Dawson of Florida and Joan Smith of Ohio; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Christine M. Bird, on Nov. 9, 2007, one sister and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Walnut Grove United Methodist Church with Pastors Jimmy Adkins and Dennis Legg officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 33, Gassaway.

Friends may call three hours prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's memory may be made to Walnut Creek Cemetery Fund, c/o W.E. Talbert, 2232 Wilson Ridge Road, Strange Creek, WV 25063.
