Sondra, 41, of Shepherd and formerly of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Sunday, in Cato Township, Montcalm County.

Every once in a while, one encounters an individual whose life was filled with so much love and joy that it is evident this person lived a life that was truly blessed. Sondra Watters Thering was one of these people. Everyone who knew her was blessed – by her unconditional love and her generosity of spirit. Sondra was a charismatic and loving woman who, through her open heart and giving spirit, provided a strong and benevolent foundation for her family. Life will never be the same without Sondra here, but the memories she leaves behind will remain forever near and dear to the hearts of many.

Life during the 1970s in America was defined by great change in the fabric of our nation with advancements in civil and women's rights, and in our continued pursuit of what lay beyond our world as the space program reached new heights. Mood rings, lava lamps, and pet rocks were some of the fads of this generation while disco music kept people on the dance floor well into the morning hours. It was during this unprecedented time that Ollie and Sue (Cameron) Watters of Mount Pleasant, Michigan celebrated the birth of their daughter, Sondra Lee, on September 28, 1971.

Sondra was the baby of the family with eleven older siblings: Holly, Kim, Leslie, Kelly, Jody, James, Jerry, Eric, Dan, Mark and Mindy. She was a busy, happy girl growing up, who enjoyed the adoring attention from her siblings. Her parents both worked to support their large family – her father worked for Central Asphalt while her mother played the organ at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Sondra received her education in the Mount Pleasant schools and graduated with the class of 1989. She had aspirations of being a nurse so she went on to attend Mid Michigan Community College and earned her RN license. Sondra was currently working on her BA at Spring Arbor University and was to graduate in June 2013.

While living in Scotland for a time, Sondra gave birth to the first of four beautiful daughters, Lauren. In time, Lauren would become a big sister to three more girls, twins Anna and Madelyn, and Camryn. Sondra was a devoted mother. Her unconditional love and selflessness reverberates through the hearts of her daughters to this day. Her daughter Lauren truly believes her mom made her the person she is today.

With so much love to give, fate made sure that Sondra found her one true soul mate in life when she met Lea Curtis. With Lea, Sondra found who she really was and treasured every day together wrapped in that love. Lea became a second mom to Sondra's daughters, treating them like they were her own.

In leisure, Sondra enjoyed many things in life. She liked to travel with Lea and the two had been to San Diego, Arizona, Disney World and Cancun, and were currently planning a trip to Hawaii. Visiting family was important to Sondra. Just two months ago, she visited her daughter, Lauren, in Memphis, Tennessee to help her decorate her apartment. Staying in touch with her huge family was so vital to Sondra and, while she loved all of her siblings dearly, there was no greater bond than that she shared with her sister, Mindy. Her closeness in age to Mindy made them nearly inseparable while growing up.

In her quieter moments, Sondra loved to decorate, do scrapbooking and play Farkle with her family. She especially loved to read and would be curled up with a book for hours. Sondra's most endearing trait was her infectious smile and joyful laughter that filled a room with her presence. With a genuine heart that was as endless as the ocean is blue, Sondra touched the hearts of so many within her reach. She was truly an inspiration to all.
