Jack was born May 2, 1926, in Corvallis to Emma (Warner) and Donald C. Byland. He was the youngest of 10 children and developed a lifelong love of hunting and fishing with his four older brothers in the Corvallis area.
During World War II, he proudly served on the front lines as a member of the U.S. Merchant Marine, which transported materials, supplies, equipment and troops needed to fight and win the war.
After the war, he returned to Corvallis, where he earned a degree in accounting from Oregon State University.
Jack married his wife, Shirley, on Sept. 7, 1947. In the span of their 62-year marriage, the couple lived in Corvallis and Portland; Richland, Wash.; New Jersey, Ohio, California and Saudi Arabia, among other locations. His work in accounting and finance took him across the globe, including a lengthy stay in Vietnam.
Jack began easing into retirement in 1982, when the couple moved to Brookings. Although he reluctantly gave up golf, Jack enjoyed a rigorous elk-hunting trip every year well into his 80s. When his two grandsons visited, he delighted in taking them ocean-fishing with their father, his son-in-law.
In his later years, Jack was a devoted caregiver to Shirley, who died in 2010.
Jack is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Gardner, and her husband, Greg, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.; two sons, Steve Byland and his wife, Linda, of Warren, N.J., and Rick Byland and his wife, Isabel, of Pear Blossom, Calif; grandsons Ross and Ben, of Grosse Pointe Woods.; sister Alberta, of California; brother-in-law Roger Haag of Brookings, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Emma and Donald Byland; brothers Alvin, Keith, Terry and Bernard; sisters Dorothy Bailey, Doris Byland, Maxine Byland and Betty Byland; sister-in-law Patty Haag of Brookings, and sister-in-law Hope Prescott and her husband Herb.
