Oldest of four children born to Willard Lacy Pollard I and Nellie Theresa O'Hare. He was raised in Evanston, and obtained a degree in chemical engineering. In 1936 he married Elizabeth Ross and they had one son, Willard Lacy III. They lived in New Jersey, Maryland, and Ohio before retiring to Florida.
