On the afternoon of July 13, 2010, the Canton community was saddened by the loss of one of its more endearing citizens. Elizabeth Annalee (Hickok) (Morse) Castle, 88, passed away quietly at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.

Born Oct. 15, 1921, on her family's Porter Road farm in Troy Township, she was the daughter of Arthur and Annalee (Wheeler) Hickok. A 1939 graduate of Troy High School, Betty enlisted in the Women's Army Corps (WACS), serving meritoriously as a medical surgical technician. After returning home, she was courted by a young man named Bruce L. Morse, and in 1949 they were united in marriage. The young couple resided in LeRoy, raising three sons and four daughters, and shared 38 years until Bruce's passing in 1987.

Two years later, Betty married James Castle of Canton, who was himself a widower with a grown family. With her sweet, charming demeanor, Betty immediately endeared herself to her new sons, daughters and grandchildren and loved them as her own, uniting the Morses and Castles into one harmonious family unit. In 1999 James passed away, but Betty was strengthened by the love of her extended family.

In 2005 her heart was won by yet another gentleman, Harmon Blow of Towanda, and they were wed. Harmon passed away four years later, but not before Betty had spread her love to his children and their families.

She was active in several area organizations, including the Open Hand Grange, the Canton Senior Citizens and the Canton Music Club. Her membership in the grange exceeded 50 years. Betty was also fond of playing cards and board games, especially Aggravation, sharing quality time with her children and grandchidlren. She truly was a "people person." Betty was also a great lover of music, and in her youth was proficient at playing the violin. She was also quite proud of being a descendant of the famous icon of the American West, Wild Bill Hickok. Betty had an enormous zest for life and a generous nature. She always put others before herself, often giving away gifts that she had received to others who needed them more. In more recent times, while residing at the Bradford County Manor, she could be found wheeling herself around the premises brightening the days of residents whom she deemed to be less fortunate than herself.

But most important to Betty was her walk with Jesus, whom she came to know as a child while attending the First Baptist Church of Troy. At the age of 12 she put her life into His Hands and she was washed in the waters of baptism. She later transferred her membership to the Faith Baptist Church in Canton, and during the past few years also shared in the fellowship of Grace Baptist Church in Towanda. But the lessons she learned remained with her, and she walked in the Light of His Love until He called her Home.

Preceding her in death were her husbands Bruce Morse Sr., James Castle and Harmon Blow; brother Frank Hickok; and sisters Marion Bly and Lucille Gernert.

Calling hours will be from 3-5 p.m. Friday, July 16, at the Faith Baptist Church, Route 414, just east of Canton Borough. Funeral services was July 16 at the Faith Baptist Church, with Pastor John Latimer and Rev. Duane Taylor officiating.

Interment was in LeRoy Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to either Faith Baptist Church of Canton or the Canton Music Club, c/o Florence Finogle, 246 Troy St., Canton, PA 17724.

Professional services were entrusted to Morse & Kleese Funeral Home of Canton.
