Josiah Valentine was born April 30, 1818, in Frederick County, Maryland, the son of Jacob and Rebecca Picking Valentine. He married on October 16, 1845, in Carroll County, Maryland, to Emily Shriner, daughter of George Michael Shriner and Anna Catherine Hollenberger. They were the parents of 5 children: Milton Oliver, Martha Ellen, Albert Curtis, Emma C. and Harvey T. Valentine. Josiah passed away on December 4, 1885, in Liberty District, Frederick County and was buried in Union Chapel Cemetery in Libertytown, Frederick County, Maryland.

"Josiah Valentine, aged about 77 years, a prominent citizen of Liberty District, Frederick County, Maryland, died suddenly on Friday evening. He was seated with his family in conversation, when he fell over and expired. Deceased was a brother of Dr. M. Valentine, of the theological seminary."

"Mr. Josiah Valentine, aged about 67 years, died suddenly at his home in Frederick County, on Friday night last. He was a prominant farmer, and at one time president of the board of County Commissioners. He was a brother of Rev. Dr. M. Valentine, president of Gettysburg College."
