Levi Valentine was born in Frederick County, Maryland, on August 7, 1816, the son of Jacob and Rebecca Picking Valentine. On June 4, 1846, he married Angeline Clark, daughter of Samuel and Margaret Grubb Clark. They were the parents of eight children: Vincent Villiers, Calvin Clinton, Alice Virginia, Clara Minnesota, John Milton, Ida Isabel Catharine, William Sheridan and Sadie Cora Valentine.

"Levi Valentine, a prominent citizen of Carroll County, Maryland, brother of Rev. Dr. M. Valentine, of this place, died at his home near Carrollton, last Wednesday morning, aged 86 years. Deceased held a number of important offices in his native county during his lifetime and in 1869 was appointed to a clerkship in the Baltimore Custom House and afterwards was transferred to the office of clerk to the steamship inspectors. He served in this position until he was appointed one of the inspectors on the board. He leaves a widow, four married daughters and two sons."
