Lydia Lavinia Valentine was born December 19, 1837, in Frederick County, Maryland, the daughter of Jacob and Rebecca Picking Valentine. On March 9, 1859, she married Joel H. Bowers, in Carroll County, Maryland. They were the parents of one son, William Ellsworth Bowers. Lydia died in 1863, when son William was just 2 years old. Joel subsequently married Juliana Stonebridle Valentine, widow of Thomas Valentine, Lydia's brother.
