Harold Sidney (Sid) Capman, age 85 of Battle Creek, passed away Thursday August 23rd, 2012 at his home. He was born November 3, 1926 in Sturgis to Harold and Edith (Ritter) Capman. Sid enlisted in the Army and served from 1943 to 1945 during which time he fought in WWII. Upon his return, he married Edith (Anthony) Capman on June 30, 1948. In addition to being a lifelong farmer, Sid owned and operated a backhoe business and stump removal service. He was also employed at Battle Creek Packaging (Bread Wrapper) as a machinist, Fisher Body, Hayes Machine Company and was a well-known local machinist, fabricator and entrepreneur. Following his career in the service, Sid learned to fly airplanes through the G.I. Bill and took great joy in ‘buzzing' over fellow farmers and family members properties. He was a member of the Jackson Chapter of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association). In the early 1960s Sid and Edith along with others rode their Harley's to Alaska for an adventurous vacation. Some of his interests include tinkering on most anything, flying airplanes, playing pool in addition to playing cards and domino's with friends and family.
Sid was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years; Edith Capman, his brothers Richard Capman, Theodore Capman, Lloyd Capman and Billy Capman in early childhood.
Sid is survived by his two sons, David (Cheryl) Capman of Altoona, Iowa and Bob (Sue) Capman of Battle Creek; his sisters, Judy Coy of Battle Creek, Xenna Johnson of Sherwood and Carol (Jim) Davis of Portage. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Kirk (Farah) Capman of Iowa, Terry (Michelle) Capman of Iowa, Stacy (Bill) Thorndyke of Bellevue and Becky (Mike) Domingo of Marshall, in addition to five great-grandchildren. Sid will also be greatly missed by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends, including Ron Leffler and Glen and Shirley Brail all of Marshall.
Sid was laid to rest at Fort Custer Cemetery in Battle Creek on Tuesday August 28th beside his wife Edith.
