Obituary Illinois State Register, Springfield, IL, 5-13-1896
**********************************************************
The funeral of Mrs. Martha Shellhouse took place from the Cumberland Presbyterian church, two miles west of Glenarm, last Monday morning and was largely attended. The interment was made in Sugar Creek cemetery.

Mrs. Martha Shellhouse, nee Nuckolls, was born in Bottout county, W. Va., July 3, 1820. She came to this county with her parents in 1828, and settled in Ball township, where she has since resided. She was married to Willis Shellhouse in 1842. Of this union five children were born, three of whom survive her, namely, C. M. Shellhouse, of Edinburg, Ill.; and J. H. Shellhouse, and Mrs. J. H. Pulliam, of Glenarm; also three sisters, Mrs. Matilda Pulliam and Mrs. Samuel Davidson, Sr., of Glenarm, and Mrs. Jane Blunt, of Edinburg. She also leaves to mourn her loss several grandchildren, a goodly number of relatives, and a host of friends. At the age of 15 she united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church, of which she has been a faithful and consistent member ever since.

Saturday, the day Mrs. Shellhouse died, will be long remembered by all who were at her old home, the residence of J. H. Pulliam, as that day was a day of feasting, as well as a day of mourning. The occasion was that of the reunion of the old soldiers of the late war, in honor of the day that they were liberated from Andersonville prison. Those who are still living and were present were: Benj. Fletcher, J. H. Pulliam, Robert Patton and J. D. Smith. There were also about thirty of their friends and relatives present. A bountiful dinner was spread, and enjoyed by all, and all were having a good social time when Mrs. Shellhouse told the old soldiers that she wanted them to go out and march in through the gate, as it would be the last time she would ever see them march, and that she wanted them all to march through the Heavenly gate and then she said, "I see the gates of Heaven open," and in less than five minutes she had breathed her last.

Note***
When you read her obituary it can be a bit confusing...it states that she had five children with Willis this could be misleading...two children:

1836 Winifred Jane "Winnie" (Clayton)
1840 James Harvey # 151999487

were the product of Willis' first marriage and were very young when she married Willis therefore she did raise them.
