"The Civil War monument catches my eye and I cross the street to read the inscription and reflect on my own grandfather, John Luddy, who served with the local 123rd Regiment. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Culp's farm, imprisoned in Libby prison and later in Andersonville. I never knew him but I am sure he attended the July 1893 reunion at Gettysburg for I have a bit of faded silk ribbon attached to crossed rifles and a uniform insignia which I'm sure he wore proudly." -- by Helen Andrews Hoag

From NY State Military Museum for the 123rd:
LUDDY , JOHN.—Age, 26 years. Enlisted, August 5, 1862, at Jackson, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Company G, September 4, 1862; captured in action, June 22, 1864, at Culp's [Kolb's] Farm, Ga.; paroled in February, 1865; mustered out, August 28, 1865; also borne as Luday and Ludde.

John Luddy arrived from Ireland in 1852, and joined the Union Army in 1862. When he returned from the war he married Hanora Dwyer in 1866 and lived in Cambridge New York. They had 11 children.
