James married Julia Rican in Hluboka village on August 20, 1900. They had 5 children born there, but two of them in infancy.
James immigrated to America, in part because he did not want to be drafted into the Czech army. Julia and the three children followed, arriving on May 30, 1906. Julia died the following year, which forced James to put his children into an orphanage. He sent word to CZ and asked for Julia's sister, Nettie, to come to take care of the children. Nettie arrived in June 1907. She and James were married September 14, 1907, and had 9 children of their own.
James died at the age of 51.
