SMITHSBURG - Samuel J. Winters Sr.,101, of Beaverbrook Drive, Smithsburg, Md., passed away Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010, at Homewood of Williamsport.

Born July 25, 1909, near Smithsburg, he was the son of the late Ardie Walter Winters Sr. and Shirdie Elizabeth (Honodel) Winters.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Edna Louise (Bachtell) Winters, May 26, 2001. They were married Nov. 1, 1934.

He attended Smithsburg and Hagerstown schools.

He was employed by Cavetown Planing Mill and was a self-employed dairy farmer of Lonely Willow Farm.

He was a life member of Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, Cavetown, where he was elder emeritus, served on the consistory and was superintendent of the Cavetown Church Cemetery. He was also a member of the Washington County Farm Bureau, Washington County Holstein Association and Chewsville CO-OP Association, where he served as director and treasurer, and he was an honorary member of the FFA.

He is survived by daughters, Dorothy M. "Dot" Gutshall and C. Louise Huntzberry, both of Smithsburg; son, Samuel J. Winters Jr. of Smithsburg; brother, the Rev. Richard H. Winters of Hagerstown; grandchildren, Suzanne Downey, Lori Gatton, Damon Huntzberry, Kelli Davis, Bradley Huntzberry, Staci Snyder and S. Greg Winters; 13 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brother, Ardie W. Winters Jr., and sisters, Margaret W. Kelly, Juanita W. Bachtell, Bernadette Warrenfeltz Palmer, Katherine K. Holtzman and H. Annette Winders.

Services will be held Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, Cavetown, Md., with Pastor Carol D. Hallman officiating. Burial will be in Cavetown Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, Md.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Sam to the Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 100, Cavetown, MD 21720.

The family extends a special thanks to the caregivers, neighbors and Homewood staff for the kindness and care they provided.
