DANVILLE, Va. - Charles Richard (Charlie) Carter, 86, of Danville, died June 22, 2005 in Danville Regional Medical Center. Born July 15, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Coleman Carter and Nellie Kate Williams Carter.
Mr. Carter had lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County, where he retired from tobacco farming. He was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. He would visit the local nursing homes, where he would play and sing for the residents as long as his health permitted.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II as a Technical Sergeant in Company B, 191st Tank Battalion. He served and fought in battles in Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France and Rhineland.
He married Margaret Dillard Carter on December 23, 1941. She died on February 22, 1981.
He is survived by two daughters, Betty Carter Dillon and husband, Ronnie and Bonnie Carter Lancaster and husband, Jack; a son, Charles R. (Ricky) Carter Jr.; three brothers, Woodrow Carter, Harry W. Carter and Carlton Conway Carter; a sister, Alice Carter Astin; seven grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by five brothers, Stanley W. Carter, Spencer Carter, Henry Carter, Ross Carter and Warren Carter; a sister, Gertrude Carter Blair.
Burial will be at Danville Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard.
