She lived her entire life in the Mount Cross community of Pittsylvania County. She was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, and a graduate of Whitmell Farm Life High School.
She was married to the late James Ernest Astin Sr. on Dec. 21, 1932.
She is survived by a daughter, Christine Shelton and her husband, Lillard; two sons, James E. Aston Jr. and his wife, Ann and John Douglas Astin; three brothers, Woodrow Wilson Carter, Harry Carter and Carlton C. Carter; two grandchildren. She was predeceased by six brothers, Stanley Carter, Spencer Carter, Ross Carter, Henry Carter, Warren Carter, and Charles Carter; and one sister, Gertrude Blair.
Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
