William H Bronston was the eldest child of Jacob Bronston (c.1785–1832) & Nancy Hollyman Bronston (c.1795 – c.1830) of Lexington, KY. His DOB and DOD are from his obituary.

He was married on 12 Jan 1831 to Susan Ann Gilliam (c.1816 – c.1882) His father Jacob and her mother Nancy A Gilliam gave consent, indicating he was under 21, and she under 18.
They lived in Richmond, KY, and had 2 children:

Thomas J Bronston (c.1833 – aft 1883)
Infant Bronston (c.1834 – bef. 1844)

Within 2 years, Susan left William and returned to her mother in Lexington, taking their son with her. She had a second child just after, who later died according to their divorce record (no gender or name was given for either child). Having no income except by her needle, she gave the children to William, who placed them with his uncle, Thomas S Bronston of Madison County. Susan later took back the children, after William moved them to Rockcastle County.

In 1844, William filed for divorce claiming abandonment - Susan countered with cruelty. Their divorce was final in 1845, and Susan was awarded custody of their only living child, whom we now know was Thomas J Bronston.

William was an officer of the Republican Party in Richmond along with abolitionists Rev John Fee and Cassius Marcellus Clay. His politics may have led him to his 2nd wife, Nancy Bailey (1836–1904) of Newport, KY.

Her parents, William Shreve Bailey & Caroline Ann Withnall Bailey "published the only antislavery and...Republican newspaper printed in Kentucky in the 1850s." Nannie learned typesetting from her father at an early age, and continued as a compositor her entire life.

William and Nannie were married 28 Jan 1857 or 5 Jan 1858 (conflicting records), and moved to Kansas in the 1850's. They were the parents of 2 children.

1) Charles Sumner Bronston (c.1859 KY – 1929 IL)
2) Caroline Anna "Carrie" Bronston (1867 KS – 1899 OR)
