Thomas J Bronston, aka T.J., was the son of William H Bronston (c.1813 – c.1884) and his first wife Susan Ann Gilliam (c.1816 – c.1882).
No written record proves his middle name was Jacob, but it is probable that he was named for his paternal grandfather, Jacob Bronston of Franklin Co, PA and Lexington, KY.
His given name Thomas would have come from his G-grandfather Thomas Brownston of Franklin Co and Mercer Co, PA, as well as his paternal grand-uncle, Thomas Springer Bronston Sr of Richmond, KY.

In 1834, Susan left William in Richmond, KY taking son Thomas with her to live with her mother in Lexington. Ten years later, William filed for divorce (1844) claiming abandonment. Susan countered with a claim of cruelty, and won custody of Thomas. William H Bronston remarried in 1857 and moved to Kansas. Susan never remarried and lived near or with her son most of her life.

Thomas appears to have married about 1860-61, possibly in Tennessee where he lived in 1860 with his mother. His first wife is unknown - but the 1870 census shows him with an 8 year old daughter:

1) Eloise Bronston (B: c.1862 KY - no further record)

Thomas was married in Louisville, KY on 8 Jul 1867 to Rose Harris (1840 MS –1887), the eldest daughter of William Harris (1799 Poland – 1892) & Esther Frances Moses (1818 Charleston, SC – 1904). Esther was Jewish and it may be assumed that William was also.

Thomas and Rose were the parents of 4 known children:

2) Blanche Bronston (1868–1969) Moved to New Orleans, w/o James Robert Donovan [Parents of 3 children].

3) William Preston Bronston (1870–1959) Moved to Cincinnati. h/o Margaret Loretta Quinn [Parents of 1 child] and Flora Belle Cole.

4) Grace Bronston (c.1874 - no record aft.1880)

5) Thomas Bronston (1876–1889) died young of tetanus

Like his father William before him, and his son William after him, Thomas was a newspaperman. He worked as a compositor for both the Courier-Journal (Louisville, KY) and later the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Thomas died of remittant fever (malaria?).
