Funeral services for Mr. Lavearn "Bernie" Akins will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church, New Ellenton with Rev. Brian Gilmer officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Akins, 81, died Saturday, November 26, 2005 at the University Hospital, Augusta, GA.
Born to the late Horace and Beatrice Nessmith Akins of Bulloch County, Bernie moved to Aiken in 1952 from Bulloch County, GA. As a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church he served as a Sunday school teacher for forty years. He proudly served his country in World War II in the army. Bernie was retired from E.I.Du Pont. at the Savannah River Plant after thirty three years as a production operator.
He is predeceased by his brothers, Leo Dale Akins, Dedrick Akins, Ben Akins, and Leffler Akins.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Williford Akins, son, Larry Akins, New Ellenton, daughters, Ann Temple, Jackson, Kay Pete Fuller, St. Marys, GA, Gail Herb Ferguson, New Ellenton, brother, Ronald Akins, Belcher, MA, sisters Christine Birley, East Moline, IL, Jonnie Wynn, New Ellenton, Sally Ann Deal, Statesboro, GA, Barbara McNure, Metter, GA, Beatrice Kay Bennett, Houston, TX, grandchildren, Christy Fuller, Barry Fuller, Jennifer Montgomery, Herbie Ferguson, Amanda Hall, Dylan Akins, Austin Akins, Wendy Stone, Zack Temple, Jennifer Perry, seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
