WAYCROSS, GA -- Leo D. Akins, 81, died Thursday night (01-08-04) at the Satilla Regional Medical Center after a short illness, He was born and reared in Bulloch County, son of the late horace A. and Beatrice Nessmith Akins. He had made his home in Waycross since 1955 where he was a member of the Crawford Street Baptist Church and was a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He retired in 1991 from the Georgia Power Company with 45 years of service and was a veteran of World War II where he served with the Army and received a Purple Heart. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Leffler and Lois Akins; three brothers, Ben Akins, Dedrick Akins and Hayward Akins.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Esther Bryan Akins of Waycross; four daughters, Denise Fain, husband Rodney of Valdosta, GA, Jane Clanton, husband Frank of Inman, S.C., Marion Bowden, husband Bo of Easley, S.C. and Connie Whitacre, husband Doug of Lakeville, Minn.; two brothers, Bernie Akins, Wife Mildred of New Ellenton, S.C. and Ronald Akins, wife Pat of Belchertown, Mass.; five sisters, Chris Birley, husband Bud of East Moline, Ill., Johnnie Wynn, husband Vernon of New Ellington, S.C., Sally Deal, husband Bunny of Statesboro, Babs McNure of Metter and Bobbie Bennett of Houston, Texas; an uncle, Paul Nessmith, wife Eloise of Stateboro; four sisters-in-law, Elsie Akins of Bath, S.C., Georgia Baumann of Marietta, Harriette Wolfe of Washington, GA., and Sandra Mathews, husband Buddy of Lexington, GA.; eight grandchildren, Karen Clanton of Charleston, S.C., Kathy Clanton of Inman, S.C., Hannah, Hillary, and Heidi Whitacre of Lakeville, Minn, Jonathan, Daniel, and Spencer Bowden of Easley, S.C.; five step grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The funeral service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Crawford Street Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Miles-Odom Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Saturday night.
