In late 1852, after the death of her sister-in-law, Mary visited her widowed brother, Rev. Robert Scott, to help him with his children. At this time, both Mary and Robert contacted a fatal illness and both died the same day.
Both Mary McNeill and her brother are buried in Fredonia Cemetery. Robert's wife is believed to also be buried in this cemetery.
After Mary's death, Dr. McNeill moved to Texas and remarried. Dr. McNeill and their son, Wallace Calhoun McNeill are buried in West End Cemetery, Stephenville, Erath Co, Texas. Wallace is the only one of their three children listed on the 1860 Erath Co, Texas Census in the household of Dr. McNeill. It is unknown if the two older children died young or remained in Mississippi with Scott relatives.
