Obituary from March 19, 1933 issue of Illinois State Journal: Powell, John Ashford - Of Athens, died at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18, 1933, at Springfield hospital, age 77. Survived by three sons, Joseph of Springfield, Amos of Athens and Everett of Sherman. Remains to W. T. Vancil's funeral home where funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Lewis Fisher officiating. Interment in Hall cemetery, Athens.

Obituary from unknown newspaper dated March 24, 1933: John Amos Powell died at the Springfield hospital on Saturday morning, March 18, 1933, at the age of 77 years. Mr. Powell had been a patient at the hospital for some time, cancer being the cause of his death. He was born in Fleming county, Kentucky. After his family were almost raised he moved to Menard and for a number of years resided in this city, serving as city marshall for some time. He is survived by three sons, Joe of Cantrall; Everett of Sherman, and Amos of Athens.
