He enlisted on 22 AUG 1862 from Noble County and served for three years in the War Between the States in Company H, 116th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, under Colonel James Washburn. He was wounded 5 JUN 1864 in the Battle of Piedmont and discharged 14 JUN 1865.
William married Nancy Jane Chaney on 14 MAR 1872 in Greene County, Indiana. They were the parents of ten children.
