Benjamin Franklin Cain was born in Maryland, the son of Thomas and Mary Cain. Thomas was the grandson of Nathaniel and Mary (OLDEN) Cain of Hunterdon, NJ.

He married Thursa Jane Brown in Ohio. He was a brick maker and a farmer.

Benjamin and Thursa moved their family to Greene County, IN.
