Johan Arnt was born on the Anonrud farm in Trøgstad parish, the son of Anders Olsen Anonrud and Ragnild Christiansdatter. He emigrated with his family in 1869, settling to farm in the Eureka area of Polk County, WI. Sometime after their arrival in the United States, they adopted the surname Hauge. (Although they did not come from a farm named Hauge, Ragnhild's father and uncle were lay ministers in the Haugean movement and they may have chosen this name for that reason.)

According to North Valley Lutheran Church records, Johan Arnt married Britha Rasmussen on 25 Jun 1885. She was 26 (born in 1859 in Norway) and he was 21. The names of both Johan and Britha became Americanized to "John" and "Bertha". Their first child was born in Polk county, WI before the family moved to Minneapolis and lived there the rest of their lives. The 1900 census indicates three daughters and the death of one other child. By 1910, the couple had adopted a son.
