Bertha was born Britha Rasmusdatter on 13 September 1859 on the Tolleshaug farm in Manger parish (now Sæbø), Norway. She emigrated from Bergen in May of 1881, and married 25 Jun 1885, Johan Arnt Andersen Hauge (John Hauge) at North Valley Lutheran Church, Eureka Township, Polk County, Wisconsin.
The names of both Johan and Britha became Americanized to "John" and "Bertha". Their first child was born in Polk county, WI before the family moved to Minneapolis and lived there the rest of their lives. The 1900 census indicates three daughters and the death of one other child. By 1910, the couple had adopted a son.
