Son of Samuel and Lucinda Penn Staples. Husband of Mary Stovall Penn Staples. Father of Samuel Granville; Waller Redd; Nannie L.; Madison L.; Keziah C., and Mary Staples.

Abram raised a volunteer rifle company from Patrick County, Virginia during the War of 1812 and participated under the command of Gen. Robert B. Taylor. He was later a member of the Virginia General Assembly and Clerk of the Court in Patrick County.
