Justin Earl Bales died Thursday (April 21, 1988) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, NE at the age of 97. He was born Feb. 18, 1891 in McCook, NE to Thomas H. and Delsina D. (Bates) Bales.

He married Louisey Ellen Burgess in 1916 and had seven children; Charles, Elma, Vera, Virginia, Daniel, Susie and Doris (Doris died as an infant). The couple later divorced.

On July 17, 1948, he was united in marriage to Mary E. Layfield in Denver, Colorado. The couple moved to McCook from Denver in 1968.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three daughters, Doris Nadine Bales, Elma Edna Bales Clark Gray and Vera Eveline Bales Thomas; one son, Daniel Earl Bales; and 12 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of McCook; one son, Charles Edward Bales and wife Opal of Arvada, Colo.; two daughters Virginia Viretta Beuttenmuller of Colfax, Calif., and Susie Elnora Bales Hanson and husband Carl of Yuma, Ariz.; one stepson, Richard W. Faustin of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 2pm at the Carpenter-Breland Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Philip J. Ewert officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials will be accepted in his name at the funeral home. Public visitation will begin Sunday. Carpenter-Breland Funeral Home of McCook is in charge of arrangements.
