The sudden death of Mrs. Alice V. Martin Shelton, wife of J. W. Shelton which
occurred on Sunday night, November 13th, was a shock to the entire community.
Apparently Mrs. Shelton was feeling well when she retired, but about ten o'clock she
awoke with a heart attack. The family, neighbors and doctors were hurriedly summoned
but she passed away in about thirty minutes. Mrs. Shelton was born in Winn Parish on
January 26, 1861 and lived in this Parish all her life. At the age of 14 years she
became a Christian, uniting with the Sardis Baptist Church where her membership
remained until six years ago when she moved her residence to Winnfield and united
with the first Baptist Church. December 25th 1878 she was married to J. W. Shelton
and to this union was born twelve children all of whom survive the deceased except
one, James William Jr., who died when a child. The passing of this gentle, devout
christian character brings grief to the hearts of many. She was a loving and devoted
mother; a true and loyal wife whose rare gift of understanding and helpfulness has
ever been a source of joy to her family and friends. Funeral services for the
deceased were conducted at the Sardis [Brown] cemetery Monday afternoon at four
o/clock by Rev. A. H. Cullen, pastor of the First Baptist Church. A host of friends
from the surrounding community attended the services and the grave was banked with
beautiful flowers which she loved so well. She leaves, beside her husband, eleven
shildren; sixty-seven grandchildren, ten great-grand-children, and two sisters, Mrs.
Fannie Drewett, and Mrs. L. M. Bridges of Winnfield. The children are: M. T.
Shelton, Algiers; R. B. Shelton, Bernice; Mrs. I. B. Keyes and Mrs. E. B. Barton of
Sardis; Mrs. J. E. Hughes, Dry Prong; Mrs. J. H. Keyes, Baskin; Mrs. A. B. Hughes,
Montgomery; Mrs. C. R. Mixon, Mrs. Olive Eagles and Miss Ruby Shelton of Winnfield,
Mrs. H. L. Preston of East Foxboro, Mass. (The Winn News American, November 18,
