Anthony Joseph Propernick, 91, of Buena Vista died May 16, 2008, at home surrounded by his family. Tony, the son of John and Mary Propernick, was born in Leadville Dec. 10, 1916. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School and worked on his family's farms throughout the upper Arkansas Valley.

He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and served as a radar operator in the Aleutian Islands until the end of the war in 1945. He received a Bronze Star and was honorably discharged.

Tony met Mary Jane Ukele in 1947 at the Glenwood Springs Hospital where he was a patient and she was a nurse. They married on Oct. 3, 1949. During the mid 1950s, Tony is best remembered as being a meat cutter in local grocery stores. In 1959, he and Mary became managers of the Buena Vista Texaco, which they operated until their retirement in 1979. They were also very instrumental in building Sunrise Manor in Buena Vista.

Tony was a devout family man and a community figure willing to help out friends, family and even strangers. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the Elks and Lions. He loved to travel, hunt, fish, golf, cheer on the Broncos and attend his grandchildren's activities. His yard and vegetable gardens were also a source of enjoyment. He loved to go to Cripple Creek and enjoyed taking rides to watch elk, deer, antelope, and buffalo herds.

He is survived by his wife, daughter and husband, son and wife, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Angeline Herin and Francis Propernick, and brothers John Propernick and Frank Propernick.

Memorial services were set for May 21, 2008, at St Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Premier Hospice, P.O. Box 5007, Buena Vista, Colorado 81211. Arrangements were by Runyan Mortuary of Buena Vista.
