Horace Virgil Dwelle was the son of Alphonso Dwelle and Elizabeth Tefft of Greenwich, New York. He had a twin brother Horton, they were born on Christmas day 1832. On December 26 1864, Horace married Helen Hinman in Minnesota. They made their home in Northwood, Iowa, where other Dwelle family members had also moved.
His paternal ancestors were citizens of New York from colonial times and the ancestry on the mother's side was connected with Vermont at an equally early date. Horace V. Dwelle was born in Washington county, New York, and in 1860 removed to Worth county, Iowa, since which time he has been numbered among its residents. His wife was born in Holland, Vermont, and came to Worth county in 1863.
They had five children:
