Mr. Albert J. Dwelle, who for upwards of forty-two years has been a conspicuous figure in the business life of Northwood, passed away last Friday night. He had been in failing health for many months, but his last illness was so brief that to most of the residents of Northwood the announcement of his death came as a shock for which they were wholly unprepared.
We glean from the History of Worth County that Mr. Dwelle was born in Washington county, N. Y., March 16, 1826. He was brought up on a farm and received a good education which was supplemented by good, judgment, keen observation and an unusual aptitude for business affairs. In June, 1859, he married Sarah M. Walker, and came at once to Worth county, where he engaged in various and extensive business enterprises with his brother, Hon. Lemuel Dwelle, in a partnership which continued for forty-two years and which only death could break. Mr. Dwelle was not emotional or demonstrative or given to display, and comparatively few people realized the depth and strength and genuine kindliness of his nature; but everyone who really knew him must have been impressed with his inbred justice and integrity. His faithful life partner,| his honored business partner, and a few others who were nearest and knew him best realize that in his death they have sustained an irreparable loss.
Appropriate and impressive funeral services for deceased were held at the bereaved home, Monday noon, Rev. Robert Gray officiating; and later the worn body was taken to the old home in New York to he laid away by the loved ones gone before. Mrs. Dwelle was far too frail to accompany her beloved dead, which sad mission was intrusted to Dr. E. H. Dwelle. The town Council, at a special meeting held Monday night, passed and spread upon their records the following appropriate resolutions in memorial of the private virtues and public services of the deceased:
WHEREAS Albert J. Dwelle, an esteemed citizen of the town, has died since the last meeting of the council, on the 6th day of December, 1902; and
WHEREAS he has been prominently connected with the material and moral prosperity of the town for nearly 45 years to such an extent as to render his death a matter of public importance; therefore be it
RESOLVED that the following memorial be inserted in the public records of the town as testimony of the general esteem in which he was held:
"Mr. Dwelle came to Worth county in 1859 and was one of the founders of Northwood. He and his brother first utilized the water power at Northwood and maintained for a long time a grist mill, saw mill and woolen mill, which were important enterprises to the pioneers of those times. Later he engaged in the real estate and banking business, and by prudence and good judgment was successful; and at the time of his death he had been president of the Worth County State Bank for seven years. Mr. Dwelle's life may well be commended as a worthy example of ..., honest, well directed industry, moral ... of public and private generosity. Few people knew the extent of his private charities except those upon whom they were bestowed; yet it is ... that they were ... and extensive ... his hands were always open with unstinted ... to help in public enterprise, examples of which are the two blocks of ground donated for ..., and many other contributions ... public enterprises. His life was ... by ... or corruption and his support was always given courageously to principles of good ... He continued his early habits of industry to the end of his life and his business judgment was valued to the day of his death. he died at the age of 76 years, and his body was taken to the home of his childhood in Washington county, New York, for burial."
