2nd Iowa Infantry.
Paul Burkhart, the son of Powell and Rebecca (Cunningham) Burkhart was born in Butler County, Pennsylvania in 1835. He came to Iowa by covered wagon with his parents and nine siblings sometime between l850-1855. The family settled in Peoples Township, Boone County, Iowa. Paul married Amanda McDonald sometime before the Civil War. They became the parents of two children, Rebecca Jane and William Paul. He enlisted as a private on February 23, 1864 at the age of 29 and entered the 2nd Light Artillery Regiment of Iowa on March 7, 1864. Tragedy took a heavy toll on four of the six Burkhart sons in the Civil War. Family history states the eldest, John, is believed to have drowned in a flood in Elkhart, Iowa when the family first moved to Iowa. However, other documentation has been found, so the flood theory is questionable. Paul died of disease in Eastwood, Tennessee on January 22, 1865. Brother, Hiram, died at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and William lost his life at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Brother, David, came home from the war an invalid. Jacob, the other remaining brother was too young to go to war.
