Final rites for Washington L. Brown, age 79, were held Thursday at the Wyckoff and Rybolt Funeral Home in Swayzee. Rev. Rex Lawson was in charge, and burial was in Swayzee IOOF cemetery. (Thrailkill)
Mr. Brown passed away Tuesday morning at this home in Swayzee, following an illness since February. He suffered a fall last Friday and had been unconscious since that time.
Mr. Brown was born in Green township, the son of Henry and Rebecca Brown. He spent his early life farming in that community and on February 22, 1890 was united in marriage to Mariah Smith. They lived on a farm near Swayzee for many years before retiring and moving into Swayzee 44 years ago. He drove a school hack years ago when they were drawn by horses. Mr. Brown was a member of the Antioch Christian Church and he and Mrs. Brown celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary this year.
Survivors include the widow, Mariah; six daughters; Mrs. Wm. Phillips of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Joe Benedict of Pontiac, Mich., Mrs. Earl Hunter of Keystone, Ind., Mrs. Belle Brown, Marion, Mrs. John Hendren of Swayzee, Mrs. Jack Heck of Greentown; one son, Ernest Brown of Saginaw, Mich.; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, John Brown of Jonesboro, and Jim Brown of Maple Run; three sisters, Mrs. Ed Friedersdorf of Jonesboro, Mrs. Jacob Marshall of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Laura Carr of Marion.
In addition, Mr. Brown was well-known by a host of friends who will regret his passing.
