Valentine McClure ( twin sister Melissa McClure) was son of Stephen McClure and Sara Smith McClure. Valentine was on the 1840 census in Conway County, Arkansas. He grew up on the family farm near Quitman Arkansas. On June 12, 1856, Valentine married Mary Ellen Scarlett, daughter of James M. Scarlett, and Abigail Chance Scarlett.They are both on the 1860 census, in Cadron township, Van Buren County with daughter Sarah E. age 10 months. Valentine had paid taxes on 160 acres in 1857 in VBC and he paid taxes again in 1859 VBC and paid a poll tax to vote. By 1860 he had bought another 40 acres in Section 29 township 9n 11w in VBC. His real estate was valued at 1000 dollars. Valentine enlisted in the 31st Arkansas Confederate Inf. Company F in Van Buren County. His enlistment papers describe him as being blue eyed, light hair and 5 foot 9 inches tall. This was on March 3, 1862. Valentine was put in charge of handling the wagons that pulled the cannons and supply wagons. He was killed in Tennesse 6 months after he enlisted. Valentine and Mary had 2 daughters, Sarah born 1860 and Lodeska born 1862.
