Stephen McClure was born 1798 in Kentucky. He came to Arkansas before 1840. He was married to Sarah Smith before 1825. They had 11 children- 10 living to adults.In 1840, they were on the census in Conway County Arkansas, Hardin township. In 1849 they moved to near Quitman Arkansas,Section 6, township 8n range 11w. They bought 160 acres and eventually had over 360 acres. Stephen was a farmer and raised cotton. On the 1850 census- he is listed as being 52 and Sarah 50- children listed are John 25,Robert 22,Rachel 21 ,William 18, Valentine and Melissa 14(TWINS),Matilda 11, Sarah 9, Stephen Jr. 8, and James 6. Sarah died on April 28, 1854 and is buried in Mortar Creek Cemetery. Stephen married a 2nd time to a Mary Allen, but she must have died, because he married a 3rd time to Louiza Chandler Goff-a widow of Jesse Goff of Van Buren County Arkansas. In 1859 Stephen went to court in Van Buren County and obtained guardinship of Louiza's 6 youngest children with Jesse Goff. They are Jesse M.,Wilson Z., Nancy, Elizabeth, Emily, and ? By 1860 Stephen is doing quite well, the census shows that he is 60 years old, Louiza is 41, their real estate is worth 3000 dollars and personal property is worth 1500 dollars. All six sons served in the confederate war. Two sons died in Tennesee and two were captured and was prisoners of war.Stephen died in May of 1873 and is buried in Mortar Creek Cemetery, less than mile from his homeplace.
