Gabriel was born the son of Waitman Richards and Sarah "Sally" Hodges. Waitman's family lived about 6 miles south east of Rocky Mount in Franklin County Virginia [between Sydnorsville and Sontag]. Waitman's father had established a large plantation there in 1758.

On September 23 1823 Gabriel purchased 100 acres along Chesnut Creek in Franklin County in the same area as Grandfather Edward's land.

Gabriel married Martha Dearein on 7 October 1844 in the Snow Creek district of Franklin County Virginia. Martha's previously-born daughter, Nancy, was with her.
