Kenneth Howard Bird, 88, of Du Quoin, passed away at 5:32 P.M., Sunday, July 1, 2012 at the Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin.
Kenny had worked for the Du Quoin Packing Company for fifteen years. In 1960, he went to work as a state meat inspector for twenty-five years. He was a member for many years at the First United Methodist Church in Du Quoin and in recent years he had attended the Spirit of Life Christian Church in Du Quoin. He was a devout Christian. He was a member of the Du Quoin American Legion and V.F.W. He entered the U.S. Army in April of 1943 and served as a TEC 4 with the 368th Engineer Regiment in Europe during World War II. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Kenny graduated from Du Quoin Township High School in 1942.
He was born April 5, 1924 at Du Quoin, IL, the son of Dewey and Lily (Ridgeway) Bird.
He married Mary Frances Morris of Sunfield on September 25, 1945 at the Sunfield Methodist Church and she preceded him in death on December 2, 2003. He then married Patricia Tuttle on September 16, 2006 at the First Christian Church in Du Quoin and she survives and is a resident of the Fair Acres Nursing Home.
He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, one daughter - Karen Phipps and husband Ron of Du Quoin, one son - Terry Lee Bird of Du Quoin, two grandchildren - Jennifer Foutch and husband Matt of Du Quoin and Robert Phipps and wife Sarah of Du Quoin, four great granddaughters - Adrian and Erin Foutch and Grace and Anna Phipps, two step children - Jeff Myers and wife Paula of Du Quoin and Laura Sherr and husband Alan of Cambridge, MA, two step grandchildren - Abby and Ryan Myers of Du Quoin, one sister - Ruby Szczeblewski and husband Sylvester of Indiana, four sisters-in-law - Marjorie Schenk and husband Roger of Du Quoin, Mary Lou Morris of Du Quoin, Phyllis Morris Blanchard of Florida, and Barb Janski and husband Dick of Florida, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step mother - Isora Bird, his first wife - Mary Frances Bird, and one brother - Herschel Bird.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, July 5, 2012 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Gerald Wright officiating.
Friends may call from 9 A.M. until the time of service on Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion and Army National Guard.
Friends may make memorials to the Spirit of Life Christian Church or the Du Quoin Food Pantry and will be accepted at the funeral home.
