Born Harriet Maurie Craft in Gate Oklahoma, she was one of the first children born to the newly founded Quaker community in Gate. She attended the Friends Academy there and later she moved with her family to Colorado.

Maurie was one of the country's early women pilots in the 1920's and married Martin J. Lang who played baseball in the Major Leagues and was a pitcher for the Pittsburg Pirates in the 1930's. Her hobbies included playing the piano and singing.

She had a son and daughter.
