Her first Quaker ancestors were Ralph Newby, born 1591, Memorial #92913575, and Dorothy Hinchley Newby, Memorial # 92913947, some of George Fox's first English converts. Her first American ancestor was their son, William Newby, born 1636 in England and died 1704 in Perquimmons County, North Carolina. Memorial # 68835164 .
Newbys in this line were also abolitionists and among the founders of the Underground Railway out of North Carolina.
Martha herself was one of the founders of an experimental Quaker Meeting and Quaker Academy in Gate Oklahoma, where she and Charley homesteaded. Well educated for her time, Martha was an accomplished poet and loved music.
