Mrs. Mary Houdyshell Funeral Was Held on Wednesday

Mrs. Mary Ellen Houdyshell, another of Tama's pioneer women, died at her home two miles east of Tama Monday morning at 3:40 o'clock. She had been in fairly good health until Tuesday of last week when she suffered a stroke of paralysis . She was 73 years of age. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Episcopal church at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon by the Rev. W.O. Ecklor. Members of the Rebekah lodge attended in a body. The pallbearers were Ralph Granger, Harry Sincox, Charles Earnest, Charles Meeker, John Macek and August Willar. Interment was in Oak Hill. Mrs. Houdyshell was born Mary Ellen Bear, daughter of Daniel and Barbara Karstetter Bear, in Tama county, four miles northwest of Toledo, December 25, 1858. Her entire life had been spent in Tama county. On May 20,1880, she was united in marriage with John. H. Houdyshell at Toledo and six children were born to this union. Mrs. Houdyshell was a member of the United Brethren church of Tama until 1918, when it was disbanded. For the last several years she had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and the Temple Guild of the Methodist church. She was also an active member of the Rebekah lodge and Girls Yet club. Mrs. Houdyshell enjoyed life and was of a very happy disposition. Through her faith in God and humanity, she enriched her life and was beloved by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her death, three sons, Willard, Carl and Roy, all of Tama; four brothers, James and Frank Bear, of Toledo; Edward Bear, of Crows Landing, California, and Louis Bear, of Hoisington, Kansas. Mr. Houdyshell preceded her in death in May, 1928. Five grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.
