Mrs. Barbara Alice Karstetter Bear was born in Susquehanna county, Pa., Oct. 11, 1835 and died in Kansas City, August 29, 1906, aged 70 years, 10 months and 18 days. She was married in Freeport, Illinois Dec. 23, 1856, and was the mother of nine children, two of whom, Elizabeth I. and Delbert H., are deceased. The living children are Mrs. Mary Houdyshell, of Tama, John Bear, of Kansas City, Mrs. Frances Henry, of Cripple Creek, Colo., James and Frank Bear, of Toledo; Edward Bear, of South Dakota, and Lewis Bear, of Pueblo, Colo. About thirty years ago Mrs. Bear joined with the United Brethren church in Toledo, and ever after she steadily adhered to her faith in Christ her Savior. Hers has been a life of care and burden bearing in connection with her home and family but she now rests in peace. Her death came suddenly while at the home of her son in Kansas City, with whom she had been living for some time. The funeral was held in the Tama United Brethren church last Sunday afternoon, and was conducted by Dr. M.R. Drury, of Toledo, assisted by the Rev. F. Merrithew. Appropriate music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. C.J. Wonser, Miss Bessie Merrithew, and Dr. Wood and Charlie Aldrich. Mrs. J.L. Bracken presided at the organ. The interment was in the Tama cemetery.
