Oldest Man Dies at 102 - Fred Royal , who would have marked his 103rd birthday next month, died at the White Lodge Nursing Home today after a long period of failing health. He was believed to be the county's oldest resident. Born July 22, 1860, in Waterloo, N.Y., he came to Michigan with his parents as a boy and has made his home in Muskegon and Oceans counties since. He left school as a boy to work in the shingle mills of Montague and Whitehall and as an adult, was part of the lumbering industry of Western Michigan for many years. He later farmed and was a township official of Otto Township, Oceana County for a number of years. He married the former Florence Keech in 1888 and the couple made their home here until Mrs. Royle's death in 1955. In remarkably good health in his later years, Fred was a favorite at the nursing home where he regaled fellow residents and nurses alike with his songs; many of them from his lumberjack days. He had traditionally attributed his longevity to "working hard, smoking a pipe and keeping my sense of humor". Surviving relatives of the community's senior citizen were not immediately known, but include a number of sons, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with whom he has celebrated each of his last birthdays.
