William J. Rooney of 13 North Field Ave. Dobbs Ferry died Wednesday at the Cross County Hospital after a prolonged illness. He was 73 and a resident of Dobbs Ferry for the last 40 years.

He was born Oct. 30, 1894, in England, coming to this country as a child with his parents On Dec. 13, 1914, he married Elizabeth Cooney in Yonkers.

Mr. Rooney was employed by the Lord' and Burnham Company in Irvington, as a steel worker for 25 years. He retired in 1957.

Surviving besides the widow are six sons, Thomas F. of Elmsford, William J. Jr. of Crayville, N. Y., James J. of Hialeah, Fla., Robert J. of Ardsley, Donald of White Plains and Joseph of Dobbs Ferry; four daughters, Mrs. Frank (Dolores) McLoughlin of Katonah, N. Y., Mrs. John (Patricia) Lombardi of Mahopac, N. Y., Mrs. Caleb (Joan) Ward of Ardsley and Mrs. Russell (Jacqueline) Brown of Dobbs Ferry; two brothers, Joseph of, Reno, NE and Thomas B. of Yonkers; two sisters, Mrs. Catherine O'Brien of Yonkers and Mrs. Edward (Lillian) Penfield of Washington, D. C ; 14 grand-children, and three great-grand-children.
