CALVIN J. SHORES PASSES
BELOVED PIONEER RESIDENT
Calvin J. Shores, son of James and Emeline Shores, was born in Cass County, Iowa, October 11, 1857.
When yet a small boy he came with his parents to the farm located one mile west of Fillmore, where he has since resided and at which place he departed from this life, after months of declining health, January, 19, 1942, at the age of 84 years, 3 months and 8 days.
After the death of his father he continued to live on the home place and cared for his mother until her departure from this life.
On March 2, 1909, he was united in marriage to Mary E., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Burns of Fillmore, thus linking two pioneer families of Jackson township, Andrew county.
Soon after this marriage he became a member of and contributor to the Methodist Episcopal church, the organization of his wife’s faith, and continued as such until his death.
He was a thoughtful and generous husband, a hospitable and genial host, a friend to all. Many a needy one went to him and came away the recipient of the need for which he craved. He could truly say unto the Angel of the Lord: “Write me down as one who loved his fellowman.” “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal.” “And now abideth faith, hope, charity; these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”
Uncle Calvin’s characteristics were honesty, uprightness, sobriety, patience, meekness and gentleness. When losses came he bore them unflinchingly and uncomplainingly.
Besides the invalid widow, he leaves to mourn his going, one brother, Oscar W. Shores, of Fillmore; one sister, Mrs. Georgia Abbey of St. Joseph; four nephews, five nieces, other relatives, former business associates and a host of friends.
Services were held Wednesday, January 21, at the Fillmore Methodist church by Re. M. R. Green. Interment was in Fillmore cemetery.
