My paternal great Grandmother was born in Uzin,Galicia (Poland) which is now Uzyn, Ivano-Frankivs'k, Ukraine, in 1861. She married Wojciech Augustyn on 24 February 1881 in Jezupol, Galicia (now Yezupil, Ukraine). Wojciech died in 1908. Matrona and her surviving younger children immigrated to Canada in July 1914, settling in Montreal, Quebec. She ran a boarding house there, and later owned a butcher shop. She died of pneumonia in 1936, age 74. The year of birth on the head stone was obviously guessed at - we have proof she was born in 1861. Can not explain why year of death on head stone is wrong. We have the burial record which shows date of death 16 February 1936, and date of burial as 20 February 1936. She is buried with her daughter Bertha (Augustyn) Kaluta and Bertha's husband Phillip. By all accounts Matrona was a strong and determined woman who faced many hardships but kept her family together and made a better life for them.
