Marie Sophie Assmus (Matzner), age 90 of Fargo, North Dakota died on Thursday, May 31, 2012. Marie had moved to Fargo in January 2009 from South Dakota.

Marie was born on April 3, 1922, the daughter of Benjamin and Sophie (Tschirley) Matzner. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Marie married Helmuth Assmus on September 10, 1947 and set up their home on the farm west of Stickney. Four children, David, Roger, Craig and Deb, were born to their family.

She was a caring person, not only for her immediate family, but also for her relatives and friends. She enjoyed visiting with everyone. Hospitality was important to her and she shared that gift through her kitchen skills. She gladly shared her cooking and baked goods with anyone who came to visit. Marie also cared for plants and animals. Houseplants, the garden, and outside plants thrived under her care as did the animals on the farm.

Her faith was very important to her. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. When she moved to Mitchell, she was not able to attend St. Paul on a regular basis. When she moved to Bethany Homes in Fargo, she was delighted to learn that the Chaplin held two services every week. She rarely missed either service. One of the ways she lived out her faith was by supporting the various ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Medical issues made the last several months of her life difficult. The staff at Bethany Homes were exemplary in providing consistent loving care to make her quality of life as enjoyable as possible.

She was preceded in death by her son, Craig and husband, Helmuth. Marie is survived by her two sons and a daughter: David (Ruth) Assmus of Dubuque, IA; Roger (Susan) Assmus, Pierre, SD and Deb (Linda) Assmus, Fargo, ND; two grandchildren, Phillip Assmus, Washington, DC and Jenna Assmus, Madison, WI; many relatives and friends and the Bethany Homes staff, especially Jamie, a special caregiver.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be designated to St. Paul Lutheran, Stickney, Hospice of the Red River Valley, Fargo, or Bethany Homes, Fargo.
