Gerhard C Matzner was born April 16, 1913 at Stickney, SD to Benjamin and Sophie (Tschirley) Matzner. He received his Bachelor's Degree in English from Augustana College in 1937 and his Master's Degree in Education from the University of South Dakota in 1940. He served in the US Army from 1942 till 1945. On February 2, 1944 he married Lois Genevieve Shouse at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Stickney. He taught at Augustana College and spent two years as a school superintendent in Minnesota where he continued his doctoral studies through Cornell University. In 1955 he accepted a position at Eastern Illinois University as Director of Institutional Studies and as a Professor of Education, where he remained until retiring in 1983.
He is survived by his wife, Lois, three children: Kenneth Matzner and wife Anne of Montpelier, VT; Carol Stewart of Springfield, IL; and Douglas Matzner and wife Diana of Champaign, IL; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a sister, Marie Assmus of Stickney.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Adina Dethlefsen and two brothers, Arnold and Ervin Matzner
