Union, Jan 12. - The Rev Rutherford Rowland Houston, eldest child of the late Rev S R Houston, D D, of Monroe county, departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs W A Plecker in Richmond, Va, on Thursday, Jan 4, aged about 80 years. He was born at Scio, Greece, where his father at the time was a missionary of the American Presbyterian Church. His mother before her marriage was Miss Mary E Rowland, of Virginia. She died at Cairo, Egypt, and her only son, when but a little child, returned with his father to America in 1841. Mr Houston was well educated and entered the Presbyterian ministry before the outbreak of the war between the states. Both before and after the war he taught school at Union and was for some time pastor of Salem church in Greenbrier county near Organ Cave. For the last 40 years he has served churches in Virginia and has long resided in Botetourt county. His wife, who preceded him to the grave, was before marriage Miss Margaret Steele of Monroe county.
Mr Houston is survived by one son, Harry R Houston, Speaker of the the Virginia House of Delegates, and eight daughters, Mrs W A Plecker, Misses Janet, Stella and Olive Houston of Richmond; Mrs William M Miller of Buckingham county; Mrs B C Patterson, wife of a Missionary stationed in China; Mrs N E Spessard of New Castle, and Mrs S O Falls, of North Carolina. He is a half brother of Judge Wm P Houston, of Lexington, Va, and Misses Helen and Janet Houston and Mr Hubert P Houston of Lewisburg.
